Producer, DJ, and a big fan of all psychedelic music.

Frogspawn (2014) by Iacchus is an album that challenges the boundaries of psychedelic music. By blending deep, cavernous basslines with exotic soundscapes, Dan Forest creates a world that feels both ancient and futuristic.

The album masterfully combines rich, psychedelic ambiance and mysterious instrumentation with influences from glitch, dubstep and bass music.

Diving into Frogspawn

The album features tracks like Pimp my Drum Loop, which is probably one of the most prominent track Iacchus ever made. It s a surprisingly simple track full of liquid textures and ethereal instrumentation built around an atmospheric, hypnotizing vocal sample that, combined with the groovy, squelchy, steppy bassline set the mood for the track just right.

Another track worth a mention is Ever Increasing Plagiarism. It takes you (if you aren t already there in this point in the album) to an exotic, otherworldly realm. It features rich instrumentation from all over the world, such as sitar and duduk, as well as some tribal drums and vocalizations. The melodies beautifully intertwine each other. The track has subtle glitches that get more intense as you progress further into the world.

For those who want a bit of edge with their mysticism, Paradise Lost delivers. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition of melodic beauty and face-melting dubstep drops, proving that Iacchus isn t afraid to disrupt the peace with high-energy breaks.

The Evolution of Iacchus

Iacchus is the stage name of Dan Forest, a London-based electronic music producer who began the project in 2007. Originally producing jungle and drum bass under the band nameusedtobecool, Dan shifted direction after discovering psychedelic artists like Shpongle, Ott, and Tipper. This inspired a more introspective, downtempo sound centered on consciousness, perception, and spiritual themes.

Reflections

Frankly, it took me a while after hearing Pimp My Drum Loop (which immediately hypnotized me) before I got used to the rest of music from Iacchus, but I m glad I did. This album is a unique, unforgettable position that will always keep coming back to my playlists. I m sure I will write more reviews on his music, and I hope he continues to bless my ear with more releases.
