Sensient's Projekt Grunberg marks a bold departure from progressive psytrance into dark atmospheric fusion, blending dubstep, IDM, and glitch into a haunting soundscape. After 10+ years of producing progressive psytrance and establishing Zenon Records, Tim Larner takes an exploratory leap that challenges listener expectations and rewards patient engagement.

Sensient - Projekt Grunberg: Album Analysis

Projekt Grunberg begins with The Reveal - the track opens with a mysterious and hypnotic atmosphere. The atmosphere evokes a clock ticking in an empty space - hypnotic yet disorienting, immediately establishing the album's unsettling emotional core. The kicks hit with a percussive, bouncy quality, almost like a basketball. You can hear someone walking in high heels. The synths swell dramatically, suggesting an imminent or past catastrophe. And then, everything calms down. You think it's over... but the beat is back - it's a bit more steady now, but the sounds are weird and a bit unsettling. Suddenly everything calms down, but you're not sure it's really over until the very last second of the track.

Next we have Glitchumz - this one feels a bit less unsettling, but weird nonetheless. The beat is so disorientating, you're not sure whether its the track, or did the CD get damaged or stuck. With all your focus you start to notice a pattern, but it's so sparse that you struggle to count the beat. The ear candy there are what make the candy interesting. Everything feels out of place and out of order. A distinctive dolphin-like effect stands out as particularly intriguing.

A Taste of Life stands as the album's emotional centerpiece and most compelling moment. The beat feels out of order as if the drummer was a little drunk, but what makes the track is the atmosphere and the synths. The vocal pads are haunting, and the melody tells a story that strangely speaks about sadness and stillness, despite the track not being still. I don't know how to explain it, but it feels like it's a story about a loss. The track's emotional resonance is undeniable, with its melancholic melody and haunting vocalizations creating a deeply moving listening experience.

The album ends with Sanctified - finally a track anchored by a steady 4/4 beat. While it's still a bit dramatic, the delicate sounds are calming. It feels like something is impending, but you are finalyl relaxing, you feel weightless. The track unfolds as a gradual journey, culminating in a sense of transcendence and peace.

Sensient - The Artist Behind Projekt Grunberg

In 2003, Sensient - also known as Tim Larner - established the label Zenon Records. He is known for his progressive psytrance classics, such as: AntiFluoro (2006), Way Of the Sloth (2013) and The End Of All Things (2016). His style balances between the dark and the light, creating unusual compositions, he is also adored for his precise usage of samples.

Final Thoughts of Projekt Grunberg by Sensient

The album is eclectic and fairly dark - it feels very chaotic and disorganized when you first listen to it and it may take some time to get used to this sound. I appreciate it for it's unusual structure and sound design. The track "A Taste of Life" left a mark on me the first time I heard it and I can't stop coming back to it.
